Centre for Rural Development and Technology (CRDT), IIT Delhi is happy to share the progress of Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) of Prof Ram Meghe College of Engineering & Management (C-43184), a flagship programme of MHRD. UBA is conceptualized, coordinated and steered by CRDT, IIT Delhi on behalf of MHRD, Govt. of India.
UBA has the vision to involve the reputed higher education institutions of the country in the progress of indigenous development of self-sufficient and sustainable village cluster. It started as a national workshop name “Unnat Bharat Abhiyan” at IIT Delhi in September 2014, organised by CRDT. In its formative years, UBA reached out to 143 institutes in the country, one of the institute is PRMCEAM. However, in the past three years, it has gained massive momentum and will soon be the largest programme of academic outreach in the world.
UBA strives to develop a necessary mechanism to bring together educational institutions, implementation agencies like District Administration, Panchayati Raj Institutions and other grassroots level stakeholders to enable effective intervention in the field.
UBA supports the holistic development of the rural community through eco-friendly, alternate and sustainable technologies in coherence with varied government programmes.
At present, UBA is in its second phase and it has 2,474 Participating Institutes that has a functional UBA cell. These cells are working in 13,530 villages across the country. In order to integrate rural India to the mainstream economy, UBA supports actions under different thematic areas like sustainable agriculture, rural energy systems, water, sanitation, infrastructure, education and ethos in higher education. Each of these themes is led by a Subject Expert Group (SEG).
These SEGs are coordinated by different leading and prestigious institutes. Subjects like Rural Energy, Liquid Waste Management and School Education is coordinated by IIT Delhi. Similarly, Rural Crafts and Artisans is coordinated by IIT Kanpur; Water Resources Management is under the coordination of IIT Kharagpur; Sanitation and Solid Waste Management is coordinated by IIT Madras; Rural Infrastructure is coordinated by IIT Roorkee/NIT Delhi; Ethos in Technical Institutions is with IIT Bombay; Capacity Building, Strategy for Convergence is under the coordination of NIRD&PR Hyderabad; Curriculum Reforms & Educational Institutions Social Responsibility is with UGC.
